Bitcoin climbed 1%, edging closer to $64,000 on Wednesday as South Korea’s tech-heavy stock market faced a brutal sell-off. The Korea Composite Stock Price Index dropped 11% for the second consecutive day, marking its steepest two-day loss this year. SK Hynix, a major player in semiconductor manufacturing, saw its shares plunge 17% after reporting a staggering 557% increase in quarterly profits that nonetheless fell short of investor expectations.

Chip Sector Slumps Amid Softening AI Demand

SK Hynix’s quarterly report revealed profits soaring more than sixfold, yet investors were unimpressed, signaling skepticism about future AI-related demand growth. Samsung's shares followed suit, sliding 12% ahead of their earnings announcement. This sharp retreat in semiconductor stocks comes after a broader correction in tech equities, which wiped nearly $800 billion off the value of leading U.S. tech giants last week.

Meanwhile, the MSCI Asia Pacific index dropped 2%, hitting lows not seen since mid-April, and Nasdaq 100 futures extended a five-day losing streak. This downturn highlights a reassessment of sky-high expectations that had propelled chipmakers and AI-focused companies to record valuations earlier in the year.

Cryptocurrency Shows Resilience Amid Market Turbulence

Unlike tech stocks, Bitcoin and other major cryptocurrencies like Ether, XRP, and BNB managed to inch higher during this period of market stress. Bitcoin’s relative independence from the recent AI-driven sell-off is notable. Though crypto had previously tracked chip stocks closely rising when semiconductors surged and dipping during sell-offs this correlation has broken down twice in just five sessions. The crypto market’s ability to hold firm amid broader tech volatility suggests it may be carving out a distinct identity beyond AI-linked equities.

Ether rose 1% to $1,899, XRP gained 2% to $1.07, and BNB moved up to $567, while Solana maintained around $73. The only major cryptocurrency to slide was Hyperliquid’s HYPE, down 3% at $54. This divergence underlines the evolving dynamics between crypto assets and traditional tech sectors, especially as regulatory uncertainties and Federal Reserve decisions loom ahead.
