Hawkesbury Brewing Co in New South Wales turns the waste heat from 16 submerged Bitcoin miners into all the hot water needed to brew 100,000 litres of beer each month. The miners, cooled by immersion in a special liquid heated to about 90°C, transfer their excess heat through a heat exchanger directly into the brewery’s water system, powering brewing and cleaning processes.

This innovative setup runs solely on excess solar power from rooftop panels, activating only when solar generation surpasses onsite demand. That means the Bitcoin rigs don’t draw electricity from the grid, giving the brewery a net-zero carbon footprint. The operation produces roughly $2,000 in monthly Bitcoin rewards, nearly covering the brewery’s electricity bills while cutting out natural gas use.

Faced with low returns from selling surplus solar energy back to the grid and safety concerns over battery storage near alcohol production, Hawkesbury Brewing found a clever alternative. By combining crypto mining with heat recycling, they turned excess renewable power into both digital assets and a sustainable heat source for beer production.
