Apple’s shares climbed approximately 3 percent on Monday, pushing its market capitalization past $4.9 trillion, overtaking Nvidia’s $4.8 trillion valuation. Trading near $336.27, Apple teetered on hitting a new record close, propelled by a 22 percent surge so far this year that outshines many tech giants.
Meanwhile, Nvidia’s stock dropped about 5 percent amid fresh selling pressure, reflecting growing investor caution on AI infrastructure spending following reports of potential financing deals related to OpenAI data centers. This volatility has rattled chipmakers and other AI-linked firms.
Apple distinguished itself by embracing a more conservative capital expenditure strategy. Contrary to peers ramping up investment in AI hardware, Apple has scaled back spending over the past three quarters, focusing on integrating AI features into devices without ballooning infrastructure costs. Jay Woods, chief market strategist at Freedom Capital Markets, noted that Apple dodged the capex pitfalls facing rivals, despite earlier criticism for underinvesting in AI.
This fiscal discipline resonates amid a wider trend of investor preference for cash control during an intense week of tech earnings. Apple now leads the broader Magnificent Seven tech group for the year, moving ahead of Nvidia, which had been a key AI trade beneficiary.
Other tech giants reveal contrasting approaches: Alphabet recently increased its capital spending outlook to support AI infrastructure, and Tesla boosted investments in robotaxi and robotics ventures, with shares falling after their earnings. As Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta prepare to report soon, market watchers will be keen to see if elevated AI spending can sustain profits.
Apple’s conservative AI investment offers some insulation against recent shocks, such as the launch of a new Chinese AI model that spooked chip stocks earlier this month. While questions remain about the company’s product rollout speed and AI capabilities, its strategy currently appeals to investors wary of aggressive spending.
Apple is set to release quarterly earnings soon, a report that could cement its lead or reveal new challenges amid ongoing leadership changes and product development scrutiny.
