Amazon has submitted a request to the Federal Communications Commission to deploy a massive satellite constellation consisting of 5,105 satellites. This initiative aims to provide direct-to-device (D2D) connectivity, allowing smartphones and other gadgets to connect via satellite without relying on traditional cell towers.
The new network will utilize Globalstar’s spectrum and satellite infrastructure, following Amazon’s $11.6 billion acquisition deal announced earlier this year. The company anticipates closing this deal in 2027, with the D2D service rollout scheduled to begin in 2028.
Amazon’s plan builds on its existing satellite broadband services and complements Globalstar’s HIBLEO and C-3 constellations. The primary focus is on areas that currently lack reliable wireless coverage, targeting emergency responders, remote locations, and supply chain operations.
Key telecom players such as Vodafone, DirecTV, Herotel, and Australia’s National Broadband Network have partnered with Amazon to support this ambitious rollout.
This move positions Amazon as a more direct competitor to SpaceX’s Starlink, which already operates over 10,000 satellites and offers direct-to-cell connections through T-Mobile. Amazon currently has around 390 satellites in orbit and plans to expand its network aggressively.
Recent developments include an FCC waiver allowing Amazon more flexibility in its Kuiper satellite deployment timeline, with full constellation launches expected by 2029. Securing Globalstar’s spectrum licenses is key for the D2D network’s operation and future growth.
