Despite the allure of signing a player with Real Madrid pedigree, the Dutch club faced a tough battle balancing Ceballos’ wage demands against its budget constraints. The 29-year-old, now a free agent after parting ways with Madrid in mid-2026, proved reluctant to commit to the Eredivisie, dampening Ajax’s hopes.
Why the Deal Fell Apart
Ceballos was not just another prospect for Ajax’s new manager Míchel, who saw him as a vital linchpin to stabilize the midfield during the club’s rebuilding phase. However, the absence of a transfer fee did not translate into an easy financial win: free agents tend to come with hefty signing bonuses, agent commissions, and wage expectations. Reportedly, Ceballos’ salary requirements pushed beyond what Ajax was comfortable with.
With Real Betis Ceballos’ boyhood club circling, the Spanish side became the clear favorite. The emotional pull of returning home, coupled with La Liga’s higher profile, gives Betis an advantage that Ajax, despite its ambitions, could not match. The midfielder’s earlier move from Betis to Madrid in 2017 had seen limited first-team opportunities, often landing him on loan spells, making a return to Seville an appealing prospect.
This episode also highlights the challenges European clubs face when engaging players from bigger leagues, especially in a market transformed by crypto sponsorships and fan tokens.
