Anthropic’s AI model cracked a critical flaw in the HAWK digital-signature algorithm, slashing its smallest key strength from 2^64 operations to just 2^38. This breakthrough came after around 60 hours of computing at a cost near $100,000, exposing vulnerabilities in a scheme designed to secure our digital future.
HAWK’s role in the quantum cryptography race
HAWK has been considered a strong candidate to replace current digital signatures that protect online banking and web transactions once quantum computers become capable of breaking existing systems. Despite passing two years and multiple expert reviews, this AI-driven attack revealed that HAWK’s smallest settings are far weaker than previously thought. Bitcoin and Ethereum remain unaffected for now since they rely on elliptic curve signatures, but the pace at which cryptanalytic attacks improve poses new risks for all networks planning migration to quantum-resistant algorithms.
Bitcoin’s own quantum upgrade proposal, BIP-360, focuses on three algorithms already standardized by NIST, excluding HAWK. Still, the vulnerability exposed by AI highlights how quickly traditional cryptography can be undermined, accelerating the urgency for networks to adopt solid quantum-safe measures. The $100,000 attack effort is a stark reminder that defending digital assets against future quantum threats demands constant vigilance.
