A finance executive from Ahmedabad fell victim to a $81,700 cryptocurrency scam after connecting with a fake profile on a matrimonial app. The deception unfolded over eight months, during which the victim was coaxed into investing through a fabricated crypto trading platform.
From Matrimonial Match to Fraudulent Crypto Scheme
Hardik Chandrakantbhai Soni, 33, downloaded the Sangam matrimonial app in March 2025 seeking a partner. On May 8, he matched with someone using the name Harshitha Gondawith. The communication soon shifted from the app to WhatsApp, where the scammer introduced cryptocurrency as an investment opportunity.
The scammer shared stories of significant trading profits, including purchasing a house in central Berlin, supported by fake video evidence. Although initially skeptical, Soni was eventually persuaded to participate. He was directed to register on m[.]bitcoin-on[.]com, providing personal details such as his driving license.
Over the course of several months from May 2025 to January 2026 Soni deposited money ranging from $104 to over $10,000 into various bank accounts. Each deposit was reflected as a USDT credit on his account dashboard. The platform displayed growing balances and profits, but these were illusions crafted to build trust.
Escalating Demands and Frozen Funds
When Soni attempted to withdraw his principal and supposed earnings, he was hit with additional demands labeled as taxes, processing fees, and verification charges. Although some extra payments were made, none of the funds were returned. This common tactic trapped Soni in a cycle of payments with no redemption.
Authorities have linked this case to a broader organized network targeting victims across India through similar schemes on matrimonial and social apps. Police investigations are ongoing.
This incident is part of a worrying trend where scammers exploit social platforms to lure even financially savvy professionals into crypto investment frauds.
