The XRP Ledger has processed over one million transactions initiated by autonomous AI agents, marking a key development in blockchain-enabled automated spending. This milestone reflects growing use of software that can execute payments for digital services like APIs and computing resources without human intervention.
AI Agents Enable Automated Payments on XRP Ledger
According to J. Ayo Akinyele, RippleX head of engineering, the milestone illustrates expanding experimentation with agentic payments where software independently conducts transactions to acquire data and computing services. Unlike traditional online payments requiring manual approval or card input, these AI-driven payments happen automatically and continuously as tasks demand.
Akinyele compared current agentic payments to the early period of cloud infrastructure adoption: capabilities are emerging, but the supporting tools and standards are still evolving. AI agents paying smoothly for cloud, market data, and APIs aligns with the infrastructure XRP Ledger aims to provide.
Ripple's Developer Tools Support AI Agent Transactions Using XRP and RLUSD
Ripple has launched the XRPL AI Starter Kit to facilitate integration between AI agents and wallets, enabling autonomous payments in XRP and RLUSD, the company's dollar-backed stablecoin. The kit also supports escrow and cross-currency transactions.
Key to this is support for the x402 open protocol, based on the HTTP "402 Payment Required" response. This protocol allows online services to issue a price and payment instructions directly to AI agents, which can fulfill on-chain payments, receive confirmation, and retry access requests without managing billing accounts or card details. Ripple participates in the x402 Foundation under the Linux Foundation to promote unified payment standards for AI agents and applications.
This growing agent activity on XRP Ledger signals potential for broader adoption of autonomous spending infrastructure, though Akinyele notes commercial volume, unique users, and security remain key factors for sustainable growth.
