Robinhood's British subsidiary secured Financial Conduct Authority registration on July 31, clearing a major regulatory hurdle as the company eyes the UK crypto market. The approval arrived ahead of a broader FCA authorization framework due to launch in October 2027, giving Robinhood first-mover advantage in a jurisdiction that has tightened its grip on digital assets.
What the Registration Actually Permits
The FCA register now lists Robinhood UK Ltd as a cryptoasset business, but the label carries significant limitations. The firm can arrange customer crypto trades through a third-party provider. It cannot run its own exchange or hold customer tokens directly. This arrangement differs sharply from the unrestricted crypto permissions investors might expect from a major brokerage.
By July 2026, only 67 applicants had secured FCA registration since the register launched in January 2020. Robinhood joined that small club just as the current gateway begins to wind down. The registration itself focuses narrowly on anti-money laundering controls, not broader product endorsement. Customers using Robinhood's UK service would not automatically qualify for the Financial Services Compensation Scheme or Financial Ombudsman Service protection.
The Bitstamp Advantage and Execution Gap
Robinhood owns Bitstamp, which churned $22 billion in annual crypto volume, yet the company has not disclosed who will execute UK trades or which tokens it plans to list. That silence matters. The arrangement requires a partner exchange to actually settle orders, and Bitstamp could fill that role, but Robinhood has kept the specifics quiet. No launch date has been announced either.
HOOD stock ticked higher on the news as investors weighed the expansion against the firm's struggling crypto revenue segment. The registration removes compliance risk but does not guarantee profitability in a market where fees remain razor-thin and customer acquisition costs keep climbing.
