Prediction market bettors have essentially crowned Abdul El-Sayed the winner of Michigan's August 4 Democratic Senate primary. Polymarket traders are pricing him at 97.8-98% odds, backed by $741,054 in actual volume. That's real money, not just noise from casual speculators clicking for fun.
The former Wayne County health director faces Rep. Haley Stevens, but the race looks already decided in the eyes of those willing to put cash down. An Emerson College poll from late July gave El-Sayed a 54-39 lead among likely primary voters, stretching to 57-41 when including leaners. State Sen. Mallory McMorrow bowed out in early July, clearing El-Sayed's path further, though her name remains on the ballot.
Why the market is so sure
El-Sayed owns the progressive lane completely. Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez both backed him, cementing that positioning. The endorsement map tells you everything about which Democrat this race is really about.
County-level markets paint the same picture. Separate Polymarket contracts show El-Sayed at 85-86% to carry Wayne County and Detroit, the demographic anchor of any Michigan Democratic primary. When the population centers break that decisively for one candidate, the math stops being close.

Kalshi, the US-regulated prediction market, sits at 97.9% for El-Sayed, virtually identical to Polymarket. The $741K volume on this primary is pocket change compared to the billions that flowed through presidential markets in 2024, but it still represents genuine price discovery for a state-level race. Traders aren't throwing money at something they doubt.
The seat opened when incumbent Gary Peters retired, turning this into a de facto general election pick given Michigan's recent Democratic lean in statewide contests. That context matters for understanding why prediction market money feels so confident here.
