Out of 113 altcoins released since 2024 with market caps exceeding $100 million, only eight remain trading above their initial token generation event (TGE) price, according to CryptoRank data from July 21, 2026. The median return for these tokens stands at a staggering negative 95.7%, illustrating a sharp downturn for most new launches this year.
Widespread Losses Across New Altcoins
The bleak performance follows warnings issued in December 2025, when Memento Research found that 84.7% of tokens launched that year traded below listing price, with median project valuations dropping 71% post-launch. Since then, market conditions have worsened. CryptoRank’s second-quarter report revealed that 82.1% of the top 100 cryptocurrencies declined in June, encompassing every primary token category tracked.
This analysis only accounts for coins maintaining market caps above $100 million, excluding thousands of smaller projects that have failed outright. The persistent losses stem from two main factors: many tokens debut at inflated valuations, and scheduled token unlocks increase circulating supply, overwhelming buyer demand.
Notable Survivors and Their Strategies
Leading the handful of profitable tokens is Hyperliquid (HYPE), which has soared 1,519% since its November 2024 airdrop, with a current trading price near $61.52 and a $13.7 billion market cap, ranking it as the tenth-largest cryptocurrency. HYPE’s success is partly due to its perpetuals exchange generating actual fee income, enabling consistent token buybacks. Spot HYPE ETFs began trading in May, although the token remains about 20% below its June peak of $76.70.
Ondo Finance (ONDO) ranks second with a 101.4% gain over its launch price, driven by demand for tokenized US Treasuries, yet it still trades 81% below its December 2024 high of $2.14. Other winners include EverValue Coin (EVA), an Arbitrum-based token backed increasingly by Bitcoin, which gained 20.3%, and Midnight Network (NIGHT), a privacy-focused chain linked to Cardano, up 16.5%. CryptoRank did not disclose the identities of the remaining four profitable tokens.
Examples of Severe Declines
Worldcoin (WLD), one of the most hyped launches of 2024, has plummeted 97% from its peak despite ongoing interest due to a pending Grayscale ETF filing. Its trajectory highlights how far altcoins can fall amid negative market momentum.
The data shows that hype around new tokens fades quickly while token unlock schedules continue to exert downward pressure on prices. The few that endure tend to have business models generating real revenue, actual use cases, or hard asset backing.
