Mathematician Matthew Niemerg Leads Aleph Zero Foundation in Blockchain Innovation

Matthew Niemerg currently holds the position of President at the Aleph Zero Foundation, a Swiss organization dedicated to supporting Aleph Zero, a public blockchain platform utilizing Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) technology. His background combines extensive expertise in mathematics and distributed ledger technologies.

Academic and Research Background

Niemerg graduated in 2008 from Eastern Illinois University with dual degrees: a B.A. in Mathematics and a B.S. in Mathematics and Computer Science. During his undergraduate studies, he conducted research in coding theory and physics projects, including a research stint at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology focusing on elliptic curve cryptography.

He earned a Ph.D. in Mathematics in 2014 from Colorado State University, where his dissertation centered on algorithms in numerical algebraic geometry. Following his doctorate, Niemerg engaged in postdoctoral research positions and fellowships at institutions such as Korea's National Institute for Mathematical Sciences, Tsinghua University, and the Fields Institute in Toronto.

Professional Shift to Blockchain

After completing a fellowship at IBM's Center of Excellence in High-Performance Computing at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where he optimized GPU computing code, Niemerg transitioned into blockchain consulting in late 2017. He shifted focus from corporate research to Web3 technologies.

His consulting roles included membership on the scientific advisory board for Helix Cognitive Computing and serving as a distributed ledger technology and security advisor for OneLedger Technology beginning in early 2018. He also led technology efforts at HardFork Entertainment until December 2020 and acted as a strategic advisor for Minterest, a cross-chain lending protocol on Polkadot, starting in October 2020. also Niemerg is an expert panelist on the European Union Blockchain Observatory Forum.

Founding Aleph Zero

Together with Antoni Zolciak, Michal Swietek, and Adam Gagol, Niemerg co-founded Aleph Zero, which features a custom DAG-based consensus algorithm. As President and board member of the Aleph Zero Foundation, he now oversees initiatives promoting open-source technologies built on the Aleph Zero network.
