Jeff Bezos is stepping up his AI investments by backing CuspAI, a startup using artificial intelligence to discover new materials for next-gen computer chips. The company just closed a $450 million funding round, valuing it at $2.6 billion. Bezos Expeditions led the round alongside industry giants like Nvidia, AMD, and Meta Platforms.
CuspAI’s technology simulates and tests advanced materials virtually, speeding up a process that traditionally takes years and millions of dollars. Originally focused on carbon capture and water purification materials, the firm pivoted to semiconductors amid rising demand for AI hardware.
Solving the Semiconductor Supply Crunch
Modern chips rely on rare elements such as gallium, iridium, and tantalum resources becoming alarmingly scarce as AI workloads skyrocket. The International Energy Agency warns that gallium demand from data centers could surpass supply by 2030. Most refined gallium comes from China, adding geopolitical risks to already tight supply chains.
While CuspAI won’t mine these metals, its AI platform hunts for alternative materials with comparable traits or aids scientists in creating novel compounds that were previously impractical to synthesize. This could ease material shortages that threaten the semiconductor industry’s growth.
Bezos’s involvement echoes his broader interest in AI-driven engineering. Through Bezos Expeditions’ investment in Prometheus, which helps design complex physical products, he signals confidence that AI’s impact will stretch beyond chatbots to hardware innovation and manufacturing.
As AI chips become the backbone of future tech, CuspAI’s $450 million raise is a bold step toward reshaping material science with artificial intelligence, potentially benefiting key semiconductor players like Nvidia and AMD.
