Debate within the Dogecoin community intensified after developer Paulo Vidal questioned Dogecoin's reliance on Litecoin for its security, highlighting that Dogecoin does not have independent mining and mainly depends on merge mining.

Vidal asked whether Dogecoin should secure itself independently or remain reliant on Litecoin. His view sparked responses from other developers and co-founder Billy Markus.

Clarifications on Merge Mining Security

Dogecoin developer known as "Chromatic X" disputed Vidal's claim, stating Dogecoin’s security is not tied to Litecoin alone but to all merge-mined scrypt-based Layer 1 coins. Merge mining allows simultaneous mining of multiple cryptocurrencies sharing the same proof-of-work algorithm without splitting computational power.

Chromatic X emphasized that the idea of Dogecoin securing itself independently is a philosophical stance rather than a practical expectation. He declared, "Still wrong. Dogecoin does not depend on Litecoin. It depends on all merge mined L1 scrypt coins."

Merge mining is supported by several scrypt coins including Dogecoin, Litecoin, and Namecoin. Among these, Dogecoin and Litecoin represent the most significant and profitable merge mining pair.

Echoing this perspective, Dogecoin co-founder Billy Markus, also known as "Shibetoshi Nakamoto," joined discussions on X (formerly Twitter), stating that Dogecoin is the most profitable scrypt coin to mine. He explained that AuxPoW (Auxiliary Proof-of-Work) enables mining Dogecoin with any other scrypt coin, not exclusively Litecoin.
