Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong urged traders not to use his personal X (formerly Twitter) account as a source of investment advice or token endorsements. He clarified that his posts and profile picture changes are not signals to buy or support any coin or project.

Clarification on Social Media Activity

Armstrong addressed recent market reactions to his profile picture changes, which had triggered trading activity in memecoins and tokens connected to his avatars. He acknowledged feedback from the Base community, Coinbase's Layer 2 network, about perceived support concerns but emphasized that his social media activity is not related to Coinbase's official endorsements.

He stated, "Please don't follow my personal X account for investment advice or signals around individual coins. I'm simply posting things I find interesting or funny on the internet. I may not even be aware if there is a coin or project attached to the content I'm posting." Armstrong warned followers that treating his account as a source of "alpha" is done at their own risk and against his wishes.

Regarding Coinbase's stance on promoting tokens, Armstrong said regulatory and compliance constraints prevent the company from listing many tokens despite interest. He also made clear that neither he nor Base creator Jesse Pollak will promote specific coins or "pump your bags." Instead, Coinbase supports projects through grants, investments from Coinbase Ventures and the Base Ecosystem Fund, and integrating Base DeFi protocols into Coinbase products, prioritizing long-term customer value.

This is not the first time Armstrong’s avatar changes influenced markets. Previously, a token linked to his profile picture suffered a price crash after he switched his avatar to a CryptoPunk image.

Armstrong concluded that how followers interpret his social media is their choice but hoped his statement would provide clarity. He also added that he might continue posting memes for amusement, reiterating that such posts are not investment advice.
