Approximately $10 million worth of NIGHT tokens were stolen after a cyberattack targeted Wanchain’s cross-chain bridge connecting Cardano and BNB Chain networks. Security firm BlockSec confirmed the breach resulted in the loss of about 515 million NIGHT tokens.
The Midnight Foundation clarified that the attack affected only the Cardano-BNB Chain bridge on Wanchain infrastructure, leaving the Midnight blockchain and its core protocol intact. Investigations into the incident are ongoing, with authorities working to trace the stolen funds.
Market Reaction and Security Concerns
The NIGHT token’s value dropped sharply following the theft, declining approximately 30 percent overnight. At the time of reporting, NIGHT traded at $0.01942, reflecting a 27.08 percent loss in the last 24 hours, according to CoinMarketCap data.
Cross-chain bridges, essential for asset transfers across blockchain networks, remain vulnerable to cyberattacks. Past incidents have exposed security flaws in smart contracts, making these bridges one of the most vulnerable elements within decentralized finance (DeFi).
The attack on Wanchain highlights ongoing security challenges faced by bridge infrastructures and renews calls for stronger controls and thorough smart contract audits.
Users are advised to monitor official channels for updates and exercise caution regarding the event. This incident adds to the broader context of blockchain bridge security risks that have led to billions in losses over recent years.
