BETA Technologies' stock surged 11.85% to $19.87 following the debut of its MV250 military vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft, unveiled at the Farnborough International Airshow. This new hybrid-electric platform extends the company’s defense aviation lineup with an autonomous VTOL designed for military logistics in challenging environments.

The MV250 has a repositioning range of 1,300 nautical miles and can carry a 2,000-pound payload over a tactical distance of 250 nautical miles. Its hybrid-electric propulsion system reduces maintenance demands and operating expenses by combining turbine technology with advanced electrical components.

Technology and Partnerships

BETA leveraged existing technology from its ALIA aircraft, reusing flight controls, propulsion units, software systems, batteries, and manufacturing methods to lower development costs and accelerate production. The hybrid-electric turbogenerator powering the MV250 was developed in collaboration with GE Aerospace under a Joint Technology Development Agreement. This propulsion setup incorporates CT7 and T700 turbine technologies, enhancing operational endurance while providing ground-based power for equipment.

The aircraft’s design focuses on efficiency, reduced weight, and system durability to support extended military missions. For autonomy, BETA integrated an open flight control system compatible with various autonomous mission software. Testing included Sikorsky MATRIX autonomy technology alongside BETA’s internal systems, allowing operators to customize the aircraft for diverse missions without altering core technology.

Production benefits from existing lines and tooling, enabling faster manufacturing and deployment of the MV250. This approach helps BETA address defense logistics with a more cost-effective and reliable VTOL solution.
