Anthropic just confirmed it's assembling an in-house team to design custom silicon for Claude. The move marks a shift from renting hardware off the shelf to owning the silicon layer outright, something OpenAI and Meta have already started doing to reduce their dependence on Nvidia chips.
The confirmation came through an official statement to Business Insider, paired with a job listing for a lead silicon engineer. According to the company, the goal is straightforward: co-design hardware and models so Claude runs faster and more efficiently at the scale customers actually need.
What they're looking for
The hiring bar is high. Anthropic wants engineers with direct experience shipping real semiconductor designs, people who can make big calls without organizational handholding. The roles span front-end design, pre-silicon verification, physical design, analog and mixed-signal work, and packaging. Salaries range from $320,000 to $485,000.
The job description language hints at something concrete. Phrases like "support first-silicon bring-up and debug" suggest Anthropic is preparing to tape out a chip, not just exploring the idea. That's the kind of language you use when silicon is actually coming.
Demand for AI compute has outpaced supply for months. Renting capacity from cloud providers works only so far. Building custom hardware gives Anthropic control over performance, cost, and production timelines, something no external supplier can guarantee when everyone's competing for the same Nvidia inventory.
