On July 20, 2026, AMD shares surged roughly 5% following news of a broadened collaboration with Microsoft Azure focusing on AI infrastructure.
Central to this deal is AMD Helios, a rack-scale AI system designed to power advanced AI inference workloads across Azure services and applications. Microsoft plans to deploy Helios, combining Instinct MI455X GPUs, EPYC Venice CPUs, Pensando networking components, and ROCm software into a unified platform.
AMD will begin deliveries of Helios to Microsoft and other customers during the second half of 2026.
on top of that, Azure will introduce two virtual machine series powered by AMD's 6th Gen EPYC Venice processors: Azure HDv2 targeting agentic AI and data pipelines, and Azure HXv2 tailored for semiconductor design tasks.
The partnership extends into networking through integration of Azure Boost with AMD’s Pensando data processing units, aiming to enhance cloud infrastructure performance and efficiency.
AMD’s Helios system represents a notable challenge to Nvidia in the data center AI market, pushing a full solution spanning hardware and software.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella emphasized customer benefit, stating the expanded Azure infrastructure with AMD Helios provides performance, scale, and choice for next-generation AI application development.
AMD CEO Lisa Su described the deployments as a significant step toward scaling AI infrastructure.
Early Helios customers include major AI compute users Meta, OpenAI, and Oracle, reflecting AMD’s strategy to compete at the highest levels.
This expanded partnership also enables Azure users to access AMD-powered infrastructure through Azure Foundry Managed Compute, facilitating scalable production AI workloads.
