Chris Fall resigned as director of the Commerce Department's Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI) after about three months in the role, the department confirmed on Monday.
Fall's short tenure began in late April, when he was appointed to oversee the government's main AI-testing agency, which sets standards for advanced AI technologies and played a key role in June's export controls on Anthropic's AI models.
Transition and Interim Leadership
The Commerce Department did not provide a reason for Fall's departure, but an official told Axios that his appointment was always intended as a temporary measure. Before joining CAISI, Fall directed the Office of Science at the Department of Energy during the Trump administration's first term.
During his time as director, Fall was involved in discussions with Anthropic executives concerning export restrictions on Anthropic's Fable 5 and Mythos 5 AI systems, which were implemented amid concerns over offensive cyber capabilities. These controls lasted approximately two weeks until CAISI researchers reviewed and confirmed the robustness of Anthropic's safeguards.
Arvind Raman, head of the National Institute of Standards and Technology and a former Purdue University engineering dean, will serve as acting director while the department searches for a permanent replacement. Commerce expects to name a new CAISI director within the coming weeks.
