"Every match was a new bet," traders said as the 2026 FIFA World Cup transformed prediction markets into one of finance's hottest playgrounds. July volume hit $54.09 billion, crushing June's $49.95 billion in a single month. Kalshi alone processed $38.65 billion, nearly 72% of all trades. Platform fees soared to $327.67 million as 365.9 million transactions flooded the networks. Open interest peaked at $1.91 billion, with Kalshi holding $1.30 billion of that. The scale was staggering.

What made the World Cup so magnetic for speculators was the sheer frequency of action. Every group match, knockout round, every goal and upset created fresh pricing opportunities. Traders weren't just betting on final outcomes anymore, they were wagering on tournament milestones, player performances, penalty shootouts. Prediction markets let them buy and sell contracts tied to future events in real time, watching prices shift with every development on the pitch. Polymarket and its US variant combined for $12.75 billion, or about 24% of the total. Smaller platforms like Opinion, predict.fun, Crypto.com, and Limitless picked up scraps, but the market had consolidated hard around just two heavyweights.

Revenue concentration mirrored the volume split. Kalshi pocketed roughly $252.92 million in fees, about 77% of the $327.67 million pool. Polymarket grabbed $39.72 million, Polymarket US another $29.52 million. Predict added $4.44 million. The fees were so concentrated that smaller platforms barely registered, with Opinion collecting just $50,000. One Kalshi trader noted the platform's dominance made it the obvious choice for serious volume. The World Cup window proved prediction markets aren't some niche experiment anymore. They're moving real capital, generating real revenue, and pulling millions of people into structured speculation on live events.
