Rapper Drake’s recent $1.5 million loss in USDT on a World Cup bet highlighted a growing trend: stablecoins like USDT are becoming the favored currency for high-stakes sports betting globally.
Stablecoins Drive Crypto Betting Evolution
According to industry observations, many cryptocurrency sportsbooks now encourage the use of stablecoins such as USDT rather than traditional cash or volatile cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. The appeal lies in USDT’s value stability, pegged to the US dollar, protecting bettors from price swings that can occur before the event concludes.
Stablecoins also accelerate transaction times, with deposits and withdrawals clearing in minutes instead of days, a significant advantage over traditional bank transfers. This speed and ease of use are especially beneficial for international users, eliminating currency exchange fees and bypassing banking restrictions.
Drake’s high-profile betting has inadvertently introduced millions to the concept of crypto gambling, exposing followers to cryptocurrency wallets and blockchain payments. Platforms like Stake have made crypto deposits straightforward by supporting a variety of tokens, including USDT and Bitcoin.
Earlier this year, Bloomberg scrutinized Stake’s marketing techniques, noting a heavy reliance on influencer and celebrity endorsements to boost crypto gambling’s mainstream appeal.
The rise of USDT is also reflected in its market capitalization, which briefly surpassed Ethereum’s in June, signaling stablecoins’ increasing role as fundamental components of digital asset markets rather than just alternative tokens.
