Israeli authorities have charged Eli Lavon, a 21-year-old citizen of the United States, with espionage for allegedly serving Iranian intelligence, receiving approximately $1,379 in cryptocurrency for his actions. The indictment, issued on Friday, accuses Lavon of answering a job advertisement on Telegram while visiting relatives in the US in November 2025. Upon returning to Israel, he allegedly began receiving tasks from a handler associated with Iranian intelligence. His activities included filming locations such as an abandoned building and a grocery store in Jerusalem, and he is said to have utilized a dead drop method by leaving a USB drive concealed in a 50 shekel note.

The cryptocurrency payments came in multiple increments, with Lavon receiving several hundred dollars initially, followed by a payment of approximately $518 from another handler. The information allegedly provided by Lavon became valuable, as several sites captured on film were later targeted in missile strikes by Iran.

Legal Proceedings and Broader Implications

Lavon was arrested on June 9 and is facing serious charges, including two counts of contact with a foreign agent and 14 counts of transmitting sensitive information to the enemy. Ronit Shentzer Yaakobi, a representative from the Jerusalem District Attorney’s Office, remarked on the significance of this indictment, stating that it demonstrates how foreign intelligence agencies exploit digital platforms to recruit and operate individuals within Israel.

A group named HAYI, which surfaced online in March, has claimed responsibility for 17 incidents of arson and sabotage across seven European nations. Law enforcement in the UK has taken action, detaining at least 28 individuals in connection with attacks in London. Notably, a teenager was reportedly compensated for orchestrating an arson incident in Antwerp.
