Warning Issued Over Ripple Scam Targeting XRP Users
A recent alert warns XRP users about a phishing scheme involving fake NFTs that has led to significant financial losses.

A new phishing attack is targeting XRP users, resulting in substantial losses due to fraudulent non-fungible tokens (NFTs), according to a recent alert from XRP blockchain explorer Bithomp.
The phishing campaign involves scammers distributing counterfeit "reward" and "payout" NFTs, aiming to trick victims into authorizing malicious transactions. One reported victim lost approximately $15,000 through this scheme.
Details of the Scam
The victim believed they were claiming a legitimate digital asset referred to as "Ripple Payout Token #7357." Instead, the transaction led to a significant withdrawal from their account, transferring funds directly to the scammer’s wallet.
Scammers have exploited the low transaction fees on the XRP Ledger, allowing them to create and distribute a high volume of fake NFTs daily. The attack employs official-sounding terms to create a false sense of urgency and legitimacy, further misleading victims.
Types of Fraudulent Tokens
The fraudulent tokens include names like:
- Securing XRPL Proof
- XRP Earning Permit
- XRP Cashback Card
- Ripple Benefit Badge
- Boosting Ripple Card
- Ripple Grant Voucher
These tokens are often sent to active XRPL wallets or advertised on social media, where users are prompted to sign transactions after connecting their wallets, leading to unauthorized fund withdrawals.
The Rise of Cryptocurrency Fraud
The scale of cryptocurrency-related fraud has reached alarming levels. A report from the FBI revealed that in 2025, over $11.3 billion was lost to crypto scams in the United States, making it the most reported scam category. Additionally, a 2026 report by blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis estimated that global losses from crypto scams amounted to $17 billion.
Impersonation scams are prevalent, and the advent of generative AI continues to complicate efforts to combat these fraudulent activities.
