The United States and China are preparing for their inaugural high-level talks on artificial intelligence scheduled for September, marking the first formal AI dialogue during President Donald Trump's administration.

The meeting is expected to occur ahead of the Chinese president's visit to the US on September 24. These discussions follow a May summit between Trump and Xi Jinping that highlighted concerns over the rapid progress of frontier AI technologies.

Focus Areas and Leadership

The upcoming talks will address AI governance, export controls, and frontier AI model regulations amid rising competition between the world’s largest economies. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is anticipated to lead the American delegation, though other team members remain unnamed. There have been no public remarks from either government about the planned discussions.

During the Biden administration, US and Chinese diplomats in 2024 agreed that decision-making related to nuclear weapons must remain human-controlled rather than delegated to AI, setting a precedent for the current talks focused on broader AI governance frameworks.

Geopolitical and Technological Tensions

Washington has already implemented restrictions on exporting advanced AI chips to China and is considering further limits on open-source AI software developed by China. Concurrently, Beijing is evaluating measures to restrict foreign access to its own AI advancements for security purposes.

Experts expect China to seek greater clarity on US AI regulatory and export policies during the talks. According to Paul Triolo from DGA-Albright Stonebridge Group, the initial meeting is unlikely to produce major policy shifts but aims to establish mutual understanding that could support future cooperation.

The talks come amid growing interest in AI's intersection with cryptocurrency. Binance founder Changpeng Zhao recently asserted on X that digital currencies will remain essential as AI systems may require autonomous financial transactions, reflecting a broader industry view linking AI and crypto payments.
