Over £4 million in cryptocurrency was stolen by a UK gang impersonating police officers targeting eight victims. Southwark Crown Court sentenced three men following a police investigation into this fraud scheme.
The gang used convincing fake police websites, enhancing their deception as they contacted victims, claiming their cryptocurrency was in jeopardy. These tactics led victims to disclose account details or transfer funds into fraudulent accounts, which were falsely represented as secure police-operated accounts. After the theft, the stolen crypto was rapidly laundered through a larger network.
Authorities initiated their investigation in January 2025, prompted by multiple victim reports. The police analyzed blockchain data, communications, and crypto exchange records. In November 2025, the three defendants Anthony Ikenwe, 29; Kevin Nwamma, 25; and Hamza Bashir, 23 were arrested across London and Essex.
Ikenwe and Nwamma were collectively sentenced to six years for conspiracy to commit fraud and five years for money laundering, both sentences to run concurrently. Bashir received three years and nine months for conspiracy to commit fraud and three years for money laundering, with his sentences also running together.
Investigators managed to recover about £1 million in funds directly linked to victims while uncovering more than £1 million in cryptocurrency associated with Ikenwe. The gang's lavish lifestyle was supported by these stolen funds, with expenditures on luxury items, including designer clothing and high-end watches.
Records indicated one defendant had a reported annual income of only £444, contrasting sharply with purchases such as a nearly £60,000 car and significant cash holdings in overseas accounts.
