Telegram founder Pavel Durov announced the rollout this summer of a native non-custodial crypto wallet embedded directly within the messaging app.
The wallet will enable the platform's one billion monthly active users to send cryptocurrencies instantly without fees, maintaining full control over their digital assets.
This deployment represents the largest launch of a non-custodial wallet ever, according to Durov, though technical specifics and an exact release date have not been disclosed.
The wallet will coincide with the rebranding of the TON token from Toncoin back to Gram, reflecting the original name from Telegram's 2018 whitepaper.
This move aligns with Telegram's broader strategy to expand Web3 capabilities and peer-to-peer crypto payments within its ecosystem.
Users will be able to conduct fee-free crypto transfers directly from the messaging interface, bypassing intermediaries and enhancing user autonomy over funds.
The extensive user base, projected to exceed one billion monthly active users by 2025, offers a significant opportunity to increase adoption of digital asset self-custody and peer-to-peer payments.
The Open Network's token renaming to Gram marks a return to Telegram's original blockchain vision after years of project evolution.
