Engine Issues and System Updates
The July 16 abort was caused by some engines failing to ignite, repeating problems seen during the 12th test flight, which also faced engine malfunctions and led to a Federal Aviation Administration investigation. In response, SpaceX implemented hardware and software changes to the propulsion system to address these failures before the next launch.
Elon Musk initially mentioned Friday for the launch on X but corrected himself to confirm the new target of Thursday, which SpaceX officially announced.
Market Impact and Mission Objectives
The aborted launch erased approximately $100 billion from SpaceX's market value. Since its June IPO peak at $2.64 trillion, the company has lost about $1 trillion in market capitalization.
The 13th flight will carry 20 Starlink V3 satellites designed to test deployment mechanisms and laser communication technology. These satellites are planned for a suborbital trajectory and are not expected to reach orbit, burning up upon re-entry.
The mission's key objectives include a successful launch, ascent, stage separation, boostback burn, and a landing burn at an offshore site.
Starship, the largest and most powerful rocket developed by SpaceX, has undergone 12 test flights since 2023 as part of a $15 billion development program marked by technical progress and setbacks. According to SpaceX's IPO prospectus, operational Starlink satellite deployments via Starship are expected to begin before the end of the year.
