Secret Network has announced a proposal to transition its SCRT token from the Cosmos blockchain to the Ethereum layer-2 network Arbitrum. This decision comes in the aftermath of a bridge exploit in June 2026 that resulted in the loss of $4.7 million, highlighting vulnerabilities in the aging code of the Cosmos ecosystem.
Importance of the Transition
The move to Arbitrum is primarily motivated by security concerns. The Secret Network team emphasized that operating on Cosmos has become less viable as older code presents an increasing risk. They noted, "The security risk is the part we take most seriously," indicating a shift towards a more secure environment.
Key points regarding the transition include:
- The June exploit revealed $4.7 million in vulnerable bridged assets, although the core SCRT token and the privacy protocol itself remained unaffected.
- The total value locked in Cosmos has fallen by 88% since its peak in 2021, now resting at approximately $2 billion, while Arbitrum holds $17.4 billion.
- Secret Network has only $1.3 million locked on its platform, indicating significant capital flight.
The increasing capabilities of artificial intelligence to analyze and exploit older code compounds the concerns about legacy systems. As observed, AI can rapidly identify vulnerabilities and turn them into security threats.
Future of SCRT Token and Migration Details
If the governance proposal is approved, a snapshot of SCRT balances is scheduled for September 1, 2026. This snapshot will facilitate the issuance of a new ERC-20 version of SCRT on Arbitrum. Notably, only native and staked SCRT will qualify for the new token, while bridged SCRT and other assets will not be considered.
Other projects in the Cosmos ecosystem have also migrated to Ethereum, including Noble and NilChain, indicating a wider trend of exiting from Cosmos.
Looking Ahead: What to Monitor
The upcoming governance vote results will be crucial in determining whether the migration proceeds. Observers should keep an eye on market reactions to the transition, especially considering that SCRT's price has already dropped 24% following the announcement, trading at around 4 cents.
