Robinhood UK received approval from the Financial Conduct Authority on July 31, 2026, but the green light comes with sharp restrictions. The company can only arrange cryptocurrency trades and must pass on orders to other firms instead of holding any client coins itself. This marks a cautious entry into the UK crypto market for Robinhood, which has been an FCA-approved stockbroker since 2019.
Approval Details and Restrictions
The FCA added Robinhood U.K. Ltd to its crypto register, but unlike other crypto firms, Robinhood can neither run a crypto exchange nor custody customer funds. The approval strictly limits Robinhood to acting as a trade arranger without handling crypto assets directly. also the company cannot operate crypto cash machines without explicit FCA permission, and it is barred from holding client money, a privilege that many UK cryptocurrency firms do not secure easily. Since 2020, only 38 out of 291 applicants managed to make it onto the FCA’s crypto register, highlighting how rigorous the process is.
Customers should note that being on the FCA’s crypto register does not guarantee protection or compensation if things go wrong. UK authorities rarely cover crypto losses, and the financial ombudsman usually cannot intervene in crypto disputes.
Market Position and Future Outlook
Robinhood’s entry into the UK crypto space comes late compared to established players like Coinbase, Kraken, and Revolut, all of which carry broader permissions including e-money licenses allowing them to manage client cash. Robinhood’s earlier acquisition of Bitstamp UK Ltd, which has been FCA-registered for years, suggests its UK crypto orders will likely route through Bitstamp’s infrastructure.
The company’s previous UK crypto ambitions faltered when it abandoned its $12 million acquisition of Ziglu in early 2023, indicating challenges in this market. Now, the current FCA approval appears more like administrative groundwork than an immediate launch. Robinhood has communicated plans to begin UK crypto services soon, but its official statements still say no crypto trading or custody is available for UK users at this time.
Looking ahead, new, stricter UK crypto regulations will come into force on October 25, 2027. These rules could further reshape how Robinhood and other firms operate in the UK cryptocurrency market.
