OpenAI announced that its Codex and ChatGPT Work applications have achieved 8 million active users, driven by the soaring demand for the newly launched GPT-5.6 Sol model. This surge in users has led the company to reset usage limits, allowing for greater access to the advanced capabilities offered by this latest version.
The rapid adoption of GPT-5.6 Sol has placed significant pressure on OpenAI's computing infrastructure, prompting the company to eliminate the previous five-hour usage limit for all users. Tibo, an OpenAI representative, confirmed, "We have reached 8M active users across Codex and ChatGPT Work. We are once again resetting the usage limits for all." This reset comes shortly after OpenAI highlighted that over 5 million people utilize Codex weekly, with more than 1 million leveraging its features for tasks beyond software development.
Launch of GPT-5.6 and Its Impact
Last week, OpenAI introduced GPT-5.6 across its platforms, including ChatGPT, Codex, and their API. The flagship model Sol joins the lineup alongside the cost-effective Terra model and the speed-focused Luna model. ChatGPT Work utilizes GPT-5.6 to assist users in various professional tasks, such as research, data analysis, document preparation, and spreadsheet management. The product is currently available for desktop users and is being rolled out for supported web and mobile plans.
Future Capacity Challenges
OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, acknowledged the explosive growth in demand for GPT-5.6 Sol, attributing the company's ability to support the increase to its inference team. He remarked, "5.6 Sol growth is insane. We are going to move mountains to continue to scale, but it is possible there are some hiccups soon." This statement suggests that users may encounter temporary capacity issues as OpenAI expands its infrastructure to accommodate the rising demand.
GPT-5.6 Sol is accessible to Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users on ChatGPT Work and Codex. OpenAI also provides enhanced reasoning settings for complex tasks, including max and ultra modes for eligible plans.
