Mysten Labs loses its technical architect as Blackshear heads to Anthropic for AI security work

Sam Blackshear, who built Move and shaped Sui's architecture at Mysten Labs, is walking away from day-to-day operations to join Anthropic's defensive security team. The shift matters because it signals where top crypto infrastructure talent sees the real problem: not blockchain scaling, but the collision between AI capabilities and cybersecurity. Why this move makes sense for Blackshear

Blackshear didn't just co-found Mysten in 2021 with Evan Cheng and other ex-Diem engineers. He designed Move, the smart-contract language originally meant for Meta's Libra project, and architected Sui as a layer 1 blockchain. That's serious foundational work. But he's framing his departure around something else entirely: AI is fundamentally changing how attackers and defenders operate, and he wants to be in the lab working on defensive tools, not managing a company.

The timing is telling. As AI security becomes the frontier issue across tech, engineers at his level are choosing to focus there rather than chase blockchain adoption metrics. Anthropic, which focuses on building safer AI systems, got someone who understands both cryptographic security and the new attack surface created by machine learning.

What changes at Mysten

Cheng, who co-founded the company with Blackshear, steps into the technical vision role. Blackshear isn't fully disappearing, though, staying on as an advisor and keeping his hand in the Move Foundation, which pushes forward development of the language itself. For developers building on Sui, that continuity probably matters more than the org chart shuffle.

The real question is whether Mysten can maintain momentum on infrastructure without its original technical lead. Layer 1 blockchains live or die on developer adoption and tooling quality. Cheng has to prove he can keep that engine running while Blackshear's focus turns to problems that affect every connected system, not just blockchain networks.
