Michael Saylor, Executive Chairman of MicroStrategy, has prompted renewed speculation about a fresh bitcoin acquisition with a brief question posted on X: «what is the next step?» This message arrives after a pause in bitcoin purchases since June 22, drawing attention to the company’s future strategy.

MicroStrategy’s Bitcoin Holdings and Recent Activity

MicroStrategy currently holds 843,775 BTC, which accounts for roughly 4.02% of the total fixed bitcoin supply of 21 million coins. The valuation of these holdings stands at about $54.28 billion, based on a bitcoin price of $64,312. The company’s cumulative acquisition cost is higher, totaling $63.83 billion, reflecting an average purchase price of $75,653 per bitcoin.

Since June 22, MicroStrategy has not made any bitcoin purchases, maintaining a pause through early July. However, the firm sold 32 BTC for $2.5 million at the end of May and a more significant amount of 3,588 BTC on July 5, generating approximately $216 million. These sales have helped finance quarterly and monthly dividend payments. Over the most recent quarter, the bitcoin holdings yielded a negative return of -1.6%, equating to a loss of 13,200 BTC and a nominal decline of $849 million. Year-to-date returns remain positive at 6.6%, corresponding to a 44,000 BTC gain worth $2.84 billion.

Saylor has reaffirmed his long-term commitment to bitcoin, describing corporate adoption as «necessary, inevitable, and welcome» for bitcoin’s growth as a global monetary network. MicroStrategy’s holdings represent 66.8% of the institutional bitcoin balance held by 197 publicly listed companies, totaling 1.263 million BTC as of July 18.

Company Liquidity and Market Impact

Alongside stable bitcoin holdings, MicroStrategy has bolstered its cash reserves and equity position. In the week ending July 12, the company raised $466.7 million in net proceeds by selling 4,818,781 of its common shares. This strengthens its financial flexibility and debt coverage as it transitions from passive bitcoin accumulation to more dynamic treasury management.

Each decision made by MicroStrategy has broad implications for the crypto market due to the scale of its bitcoin ownership. The recent public communication by Saylor reignites interest in possible new acquisitions or strategic adjustments by the firm.
