Meta has announced the hiring of Dave Brown, a senior vice president at Amazon Web Services (AWS), to lead the company’s AI data center initiatives. Brown, who has nearly two decades of experience at AWS, will be responsible for overseeing the expansion of Meta's data centers and the development of the new Meta Compute platform.
Details on Leadership Transition
Brown will begin his role at Meta in the coming weeks, reporting directly to the head of infrastructure. His appointment comes as Meta seeks to expand its AI capabilities significantly. Notably, this move sees Brown leaving a prominent position at AWS, where he was a key figure in shaping the company's computing and machine learning services.
His departure follows a memo from AWS CEO Matt Garman, which highlighted Brown’s contributions to the company, including his advisory role for Amazon CEO Andy Jassy. Following Brown’s exit, Dave Treadwell will take over his responsibilities at AWS.
Expansion Plans and Market Implications
Meta's AI data center project in Louisiana is set to increase its capacity from 2 gigawatts to 5 gigawatts, with investments in the project surpassing $50 billion. This expansion aligns with Meta's strategy to enhance its infrastructure to compete with leading cloud providers.
Meta Compute aims to potentially offer AI infrastructure services to external customers, similar to the models established by AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud. Currently, AWS generates over $100 billion in annual revenue, highlighting the competitive nature of the cloud infrastructure market.
Meta operates one of the largest private computing networks globally, utilizing its infrastructure to train substantial AI models, including its Llama family of models. Until now, the majority of this computational capacity has been reserved for internal use, primarily focused on advertising revenue.
