Kraken introduced crypto options trading on its Kraken Pro platform on July 16, 2026, allowing users to open Bitcoin and Ether positions without posting any cryptocurrency as collateral, according to CoinDesk.

Features and Market Context

The new options are USD-settled European-style contracts that settle entirely in dollars and reside in the same account traders use for spot and futures. This design removes the need for crypto collateral, reducing friction for traders who previously avoided crypto options due to collateral complexities.

Alexia Theodorou, Kraken’s director of derivatives, attributed the limited growth in crypto options to product design flaws rather than lack of demand. She explained that existing platforms mostly serve institutional traders and market makers, pushing retail traders towards simpler perpetual futures contracts.

The contracts launched through a request-for-quote system and initially are accessible only to eligible clients outside Europe, North America, and Australia. Kraken plans to expand access to Europe once regulatory approvals are in place. Future updates will include a public order book and support for additional assets beyond Bitcoin and Ether.

Traders now can post collateral in over 30 fiat currencies, and portfolio margin is enabled by default, allowing offsetting positions across products to lower collateral needs. This model aligns with a broader industry trend toward institutional-style product designs in crypto derivatives.

Despite this launch, options still represent a small portion of crypto derivatives volume compared to futures, with market leaders including Deribit, CME Group, and Binance. Kraken’s new options roll out follows its expansion into regulated U.S. derivatives markets, building on prior products like regulated perpetual futures launched via its Bitnomial platform.

Currently, access is restricted by region at launch, so traders should verify eligibility. The new offering provides a dollar-only approach within the familiar Kraken Pro account, attracting users previously deterred by crypto collateral requirements.
