Galaxy has committed up to $5 million to safeguard Bitcoin from the emerging risks posed by quantum computing advancements. This funding targets developers working on post-quantum security measures for the cryptocurrency.
Led by crypto advocate Mike Novogratz, the Galaxy Bitcoin Quantum Readiness Initiative aims to finance efforts focused on new cryptographic signature schemes, Bitcoin upgrade proposals, and wallet migration techniques to enhance quantum resilience. Despite no current quantum computers capable of compromising Bitcoin’s elliptic curve cryptography, the company warns that breakthroughs could happen sooner than expected.
Alex Thorn, head of research at Galaxy Digital, highlighted a disconnect between the rapid progress in quantum computing and the Bitcoin developer community’s cautious approach to integrating post-quantum cryptography. The initiative includes developer grants, ongoing research through Galaxy Research, and guidance from a Quantum Advisory Council consisting of experts in quantum technology and cryptography.
A recent report from Galaxy detailed Bitcoin’s vulnerabilities tied to potential future quantum capabilities that might break its digital signatures, putting millions of coins at risk under certain scenarios. The firm acknowledges these threats but notes that Bitcoin’s decentralized governance and slow upgrade process pose challenges for implementing necessary quantum-resistant protocols.
While the Bitcoin network currently remains secure, Galaxy encourages proactive measures to close the gap. The initiative reflects growing industry awareness about the importance of preparing for quantum computing’s impact on digital asset security.
