As of July 20, 2026, no Ethereum validators are waiting to unstake, marking the exit queue at zero for the third consecutive day, based on data from ValidatorQueue.
This signals a halt in withdrawals from the network after the exit queue peaked at 2.67 million ETH in September 2025, a figure that triggered substantial selling pressure. The exit queue had previously cleared in January 2026 before filling again.
Current Staking and Queue Status
Ethereum currently hosts 884,440 active validators with over 40.8 million ETH staked, accounting for approximately 33.51% of the circulating supply. Meanwhile, the entry queue holds about 2,499,792 ETH waiting to join the validator set, with an approximate delay of 43 days.
The presence of queues is tied to the beacon chain's need to process and store validator data, creating a bottleneck as the network scales.
Planned Beacon Chain Redesign
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin proposed a redesign titled “The Extremely Lean Chain” to address scaling challenges. This plan aims to reduce per-validator data to around 6 bytes using zero-knowledge proofs, specifically replacing per-epoch balance updates with a single daily ZK-STARK proof.
The redesign also intends to delegate state management to validators, allowing full nodes to maintain a lighter load, effectively creating a "Lean Ethereum."
