The Ethereum Foundation has announced the dissolution of its Protocol Support team, effective immediately. This decision comes after a significant restructuring aimed at decreasing staff and reorganizing the foundation's operational layers, marking the end of a key chapter in Ethereum's development.

Established in 2021, Protocol Support played a crucial role in coordinating major network upgrades, including The Merge, as well as subsequent improvements such as Dencun and Pectra. The team was responsible for organizing All Core Developers meetings and facilitating discussions around Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs), helping ensure a structured development process across the Ethereum ecosystem.

Throughout its tenure, Protocol Support was instrumental in facilitating the transition from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake, assisting with critical upgrades like Berlin, London, and the Arrow Glacier. The team also provided vital coordination for testnets such as Rayonism and Amphora, leading to smoother shifts in network protocols.

In addition to these enhancements, Protocol Support spearheaded initiatives such as the Ethereum Protocol Fellowship, which aimed to nurture emerging developers in protocol research and client development. This fellowship aimed to integrate new talent into the Ethereum community by connecting them with seasoned professionals.

Despite the dissolution, the foundation plans to redistribute the former team's responsibilities across its new structural framework. Officials stated that while the previous organizational setup is no longer in place, members like Mario Havel will remain with the foundation, albeit in different roles.

The closure was confirmed through public announcements from former team members. William Morriss, the team's lead, noted that this restructuring signifies a shift in how the foundation will approach coordination and support for Ethereum moving forward.
