ENS DAO finalized the formation of a new security committee that requires five out of eight members to authorize any protective actions. This update strengthens the network's governance safeguards by increasing the multisig threshold from the previous four-of-eight arrangement.

The council's sole authority is to cancel malicious proposals, while it cannot initiate governance decisions independently. The proposal to create this security council passed with 4.23 million votes in favor, surpassing the quorum requirement by a significant margin: 4.47 million votes were cast in total with only 94,530 against and 242,240 abstentions, according to the Tally platform.

Committee Structure and Governance Role

The new Security Council operates under proposal EP 6.50, which mandates a 5-of-8 multisignature agreement for any action, replacing the former 4-of-8 threshold set by EP 5.13. The council’s authority comes through the DAO’s TimelockController, restricting it to canceling harmful proposals but not allowing it to execute governance initiatives.

This measure enhances security without changing the council’s cancel-only mandate, emphasizing its role as a protective layer within ENS governance rather than a decision-making entity.

When checked on July 21, 2026, the proposal was pending execution onchain, meaning the vote had cleared but the transaction granting the council its power was not yet finalized. This adjustment coincides with the scheduled replacement of the outgoing council whose term expires later this month.

The governance changes come amid broader shifts in crypto governance and security. Related projects continue enhancing protocols for safety, as seen with recent initiatives like the Aave v3.1 upgrade.
