Elon Musk has publicly sided with Apple in its lawsuit against OpenAI, which accuses the AI company of stealing trade secrets related to hardware designs. The conflict escalated on social media platform X, where Musk exchanged barbs with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
Apple's lawsuit claims that OpenAI improperly utilized proprietary technology shared by former Apple employees, including a notable figure, Tang Tan. These allegations include that Tan encouraged staff members to present genuine components and prototypes during meetings. Apple alleges these components are linked to upcoming AI-related products.
Musk seized upon Apple's accusations, labeling Altman as a fraudster and referring to him as “Scam Altman.” He criticized Altman’s previous statements about his dedication to OpenAI, suggesting that Altman’s commitment was merely a cover for deceptive practices. Musk resurrected a photo from Altman's Senate testimony, twisting Altman’s words to imply that his passion is centered around scamming.
In response, Altman hit back at Musk, mocking his plans for orbital data centers designed to compute AI tasks in space. He referred to Musk's ventures as “pop-up shops” aimed at attracting investors, expressing skepticism about the feasibility of these projects.
The exchange reflects a growing tension between the two tech leaders, with Musk leveraging the legal battle to challenge Altman’s credibility. As the situation develops, it brings to light the competitive dynamics of the AI and technology sectors.
