Chelsea plans to move at least five centre-backs before next season, targeting roughly £90 million in sales. New manager Xabi Alonso wants a leaner defensive unit, cutting down from the bloated squad the club has been carrying. Benoit Badiashile and Axel Disasi headline the clearance, with Trevoh Chalobah also on the exit list.
Badiashile arrived from Monaco for £35 million in 2023. He's now the subject of a loan-to-buy offer from Napoli in Serie A. The club is banking on recouping a meaningful chunk of its initial investment across these three alone, with two more centre-backs expected to follow. Alonso's stated preference is for just four to five defenders to foster clearer roles and squad cohesion.
The £90 million target looks ambitious but reachable if deals close at decent valuations. A slow transfer window with fire-sale pricing tells a different story entirely, though. Chelsea operates a fan token, CFCT, on the Socios.com platform, where holders get voting rights on minor club decisions and engagement perks. The club also runs a sponsorship deal with BingX, the crypto exchange, keeping it loosely tethered to the digital asset space. If Disasi fetches a strong fee and Badiashile's move materializes on favorable terms, expect modest positive sentiment around the club's financial health. Dragged-out sales at discounted prices would signal the opposite.
