A Centralized Gateway for AI Tools

Access to Claude will be channeled through the California Department of Technology's newly launched Statewide Information Technology Shared Services portal. This centralized platform is designed to consolidate AI resources under one roof, providing state entities with clear, transparent pricing tailored to official government use cases.

Governor Newsom was careful to frame the initiative as a productivity enhancement rather than a workforce reduction strategy. Where Claude Is Already Making an Impact

The Department of Technology and the Office of Emergency Services are leveraging the assistant jointly for cybersecurity purposes — including scanning and patching vulnerabilities in state-managed code.

The Department of Motor Vehicles has deployed Claude to enhance customer service quality and reduce wait times for residents. Meanwhile, the Department of Health Care Services — the largest Medicaid agency in the entire United States — relies on Claude to power internal administrative workflows.

Beyond these flagship use cases, Claude also serves as the technology backbone for Engaged California, a digital platform designed to collect public input on policy matters. Additionally, the assistant contributed to the development of Poppy, an internal productivity tool created by state employees for use across government departments.

Building on a Multi-Year AI Strategy

This partnership is not an isolated initiative. It builds upon California's broader artificial intelligence agenda, which was formally set in motion by an executive order issued in 2023 and later reinforced through Senate Bill 53.
