BitGo is ditching LayerZero. The crypto infrastructure firm will replace it with Chainlink's CCIP as the sole cross-chain provider for $7.3 billion worth of wrapped bitcoin, the latest domino to fall in a broader industry shift away from LayerZero's bridge architecture.
The timing matters. This move follows the $292 million exploit of Kelp DAO's LayerZero-powered bridge earlier this year, which exposed vulnerabilities in how LayerZero handles cross-chain transfers. That hack triggered a cascade. Mantle, Lombard, Solv Protocol, Virtuals, Re and Kraken have all announced similar migrations to Chainlink's infrastructure since then.
WBTC is tokenized bitcoin designed to track the asset's value while operating on other blockchains. Unlike native bitcoin, it can be borrowed, traded and used as collateral in decentralized finance. With a market cap around $7.4 billion, adding it to the $7.24 billion already covered by earlier announced migrations means roughly $14.6 billion in assets are now switching to Chainlink's Cross-Chain Token standard.
BitGo gets something important here beyond security. The firm retains full control over token contracts, rate limits and transfer settings between blockchains. It also gets to use CCIP by default for any new assets it issues going forward. Back in 2024, BitGo had picked LayerZero specifically to expand WBTC across Avalanche and BNB Chain, requiring its own verifier plus either LayerZero or Polyhedra to approve each transfer. That setup, once seen as redundant safety, now looks insufficient.
The shift reflects a broader recalibration in how the industry thinks about bridge security. Chainlink's solution centralizes trust differently, betting on the network's validator infrastructure rather than distributed verifiers. Whether that proves more resilient remains an open question, but the market has already voted with its feet.
WBTC trading volume spiked 8% on the announcement, though the broader bitcoin market showed little reaction.
