Apple has initiated a $6.5 billion trade secrets lawsuit against OpenAI and two former employees, accusing the AI company of recruiting over 400 Apple staff and misappropriating confidential information. Despite the lawsuit's broad scope, Apple deliberately excluded Jony Ive, the former Apple design chief whose startup io was acquired by OpenAI in May 2025 for approximately $6.4 to $6.5 billion in an all-equity transaction. Ive now plays a significant role in OpenAI's hardware projects. Industry observers consider the omission a strategic choice, possibly due to a lack of direct evidence linking Ive to the recruitment campaign or to avoid the negative optics of suing a former key Apple figure. Legal analysts suggest Ive's exit from Apple may have been sufficiently clean to exclude him from the allegations.
