Elon Musk has reignited his feud with Sam Altman on social media platform X following Apple's recent federal lawsuit against OpenAI. The lawsuit accuses OpenAI of stealing trade secrets associated with its hardware developments, providing Musk with fresh material to criticize Altman.
In a post shared on X, Musk mocked Altman, calling him a scammer and suggesting that the lawsuit indicates Altman might require permission from a parole officer to visit a SpaceX data center. This comment directly references the legal troubles OpenAI is facing after Apple filed the lawsuit. Musk's jibe is part of a long-standing rivalry that dates back to his co-founding of OpenAI in 2015, from which he departed in 2018 over disagreements regarding its direction.
Altman responded to Musk's comments by referring to him as “homeboy” and claiming that Musk is misleading public investors with his SpaceX ventures. The exchange further escalated when Musk shared a screenshot of Altman stating he had no equity in OpenAI, suggesting that Altman is engaged in deceptive practices. The back-and-forth culminated in Altman positing that Musk's renewed focus on him is evidence that OpenAI's newly released GPT-5.6 Sol model is the top AI model currently available.
Details of Apple's Lawsuit
Apple's lawsuit focuses on allegations of trade secret misappropriation and breaches of contract stemming from OpenAI's hiring practices. Key figures in the suit include Tang Tan, OpenAI's chief hardware officer and a former Apple VP of product design, as well as Chang Liu, another ex-Apple employee.
Apple asserts that OpenAI encouraged potential employees to bring confidential documents and proprietary hardware components to interviews. Additionally, Apple claims that OpenAI leveraged proprietary information to engage with Apple's suppliers. The tech giant aims to halt any use of its trade secrets while seeking the recovery of confidential materials and the preservation of related evidence.
In response, OpenAI has categorically denied all allegations, with a spokesperson stating that the organization has no interest in the trade secrets of other companies and remains dedicated to developing innovative technologies.
The Ongoing Rivalry
The conflict between Musk and Altman is emblematic of broader tensions in the tech industry. Musk co-founded OpenAI but later distanced himself from the organization, leading to legal disputes over its operational changes. Earlier this year, a jury ruled against Musk in a case related to his previous trade secret claims against OpenAI, further complicating the dynamics between the two tech leaders.
