Tom Blomfield, co-founder of Monzo and a former general partner at Y Combinator, has joined Anthropic's compute team. His move comes amid a fierce competition for AI talent in the industry, as companies aggressively recruit skilled professionals.
Blomfield announced his transition via a post on X, confirming his leave from Y Combinator, where he has contributed since 2021. In his new role at Anthropic, he will work alongside Tom Brown and hold the title of member of technical staff, a designation reserved for senior hires.
Anthropic is reportedly offering substantial salaries to attract talent, with some technical staff earning base salaries exceeding $1 million. The company is preparing for a potential IPO this fall, which adds to the urgency of its hiring efforts.
Blomfield's expertise in processing power is expected to be valuable as he tackles the critical issue of compute availability, which is essential for training AI systems. His experience in the tech sector is notable; he co-founded Monzo in 2015 and served as its CEO until 2020, before transitioning to a focus on investment.
This latest hiring marks a continuation of Anthropic's strategy to bolster its team with high-profile experts. Earlier this year, OpenAI co-founder Andrej Karpathy joined the firm, further enhancing its capabilities in AI research.
