Airbus has decided to host its sensitive data on European servers, rather than American ones, illustrating a significant shift in the aerospace sector's approach to data security. The company has signed a multi-year partnership with Scaleway, a French cloud provider, aimed at building a sovereign cloud infrastructure for defense and AI workloads.
Details of the Agreement
The agreement signals a move towards European technological independence, with Airbus planning to migrate approximately 70 critical applications to Scaleway's infrastructure by the close of 2028. This is only the beginning, as the long-term vision involves transitioning around 900 applications over five to six years, fundamentally changing how Airbus processes its most sensitive data.
Scaleway's successful bid was not accidental; the company met over 150 technical and legal criteria during the selection process. These included implementing safeguards against potential foreign government interventions, particularly concerning data access and control.
AI Collaboration with Mistral AI
Another aspect of this partnership involves co-developing AI tools with Mistral AI, a French startup emerging as a European competitor to larger firms like OpenAI. This initiative will allow Airbus to utilize AI solutions developed under European law and operated on local infrastructure, thus ensuring data remains within the EU's jurisdiction.
Broader Impact on European Sovereignty
This development is part of a larger trend toward digital sovereignty in Europe. Scaleway had been appointed earlier as a sovereign cloud provider for EU institutions in April 2026, and its parent company, Iliad, is investing €3 billion into AI infrastructure, including high-performance GPUs. This investment aims to bolster the EU's position in the global tech landscape.
The regulatory environment is also changing rapidly. The EU’s recent cryptocurrency regulation, known as MiCA, aligns with this sovereignty initiative, ensuring that digital financial services within Europe adhere to strict European guidelines.
