ZachXBT has sold memecoins that were airdropped to his cryptocurrency wallet, donating the resulting funds to support earthquake relief efforts in Venezuela. The total amount raised from the liquidation of these tokens reached approximately $41,000.
Donation Breakdown
The on-chain investigator allocated $25,000 to GiveDirectly and an additional $5,000 to Direct Relief, both of which were routed through The Giving Block. This initiative highlights his commitment to charity while emphasizing that these transactions do not represent an endorsement of memecoins.
Memecoin Sales Context
ZachXBT clarified on social media that he does not endorse memecoins, stating, "Sorry I do not support or promote meme coins." Following the recent increase in memecoins launched under his name and image, which were created without his permission, he reiterated his disapproval of such tokens.
To maintain transparency, ZachXBT published the transaction hash for the sales (0x6875…f71ae) and shared receipts for each donation, including one for a previous gift consisting of 153 SOL (approximately $11,000). His approach mirrors practices established by Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, who has similarly donated unsolicited tokens.
Ongoing Airdrop Trends
The trend of airdropping memecoins to prominent figures aims to leverage their reputations in hopes of enhancing the credibility of the projects. ZachXBT's actions serve as a reminder of the risks involved in unsolicited token distributions, especially in the rapidly evolving cryptocurrency landscape. As this situation unfolds, it raises questions about the ethical implications of branding and reputational exploitation in the crypto market.
