Venezuela's Binance peer-to-peer (P2P) market has seen USDT trading volumes soar to nearly $1.39 billion from June 11 to July 13, averaging approximately $44 million per day. This surge places the crypto market's activity at 75% of the country’s monthly oil export volume, highlighting how digital currencies have become a major currency exchange channel amid economic challenges.

Ecoanalitica, an economic consulting firm, used a new approach to accurately measure the size of Binance’s P2P market in Venezuela. Alejandro Grisanti, its director and founding partner, emphasized that Binance has evolved beyond niche usage to become one of the main venues for buying and selling foreign currency in the country. These trading volumes represent 88% of the foreign currency sales executed by Venezuela’s central bank in June, signaling significant reliance on decentralized crypto platforms over traditional financial channels.

Crypto Filling Gaps Left by Traditional Forex

The growth in stablecoin usage, particularly USDT, has accelerated after the US imposed strict unilateral sanctions on Venezuela, limiting official foreign exchange operations. Previously, the government relied on crypto payments to settle oil sales, effectively pivoting the nation’s forex market toward stablecoins and cryptocurrencies.

However, the partial easing of sanctions following the January capture operation involving Nicolás Maduro has sparked a mild recovery in Venezuela’s formal forex sales market. Grisanti noted that this shift could gradually reduce Binance P2P volumes, not due to reduced demand for foreign currency, but because more supply is expected from official channels, reducing the need for peer-to-peer crypto trading.

Outlook on Currency Trading in Venezuela

The central bank’s growing involvement and increased dollar availability might restore prominence to traditional forex markets in the coming months. Still, current P2P volumes on Binance shows the ongoing impact of global political tensions and sanctions on Venezuela's financial landscape.
