The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has formalized a partnership with the Stellar Development Foundation to utilize blockchain technology for aid payments, extending its scope beyond pilot projects. This agreement aims to enhance payment methods across all UNDP country offices, aiming for improved distributions in regions with limited banking access.

This collaboration highlights the increasing integration of blockchain solutions into humanitarian efforts, moving from pilot evaluations to concrete implementations. The initiative is designed to provide effective governance frameworks and an implementation guide for broader applications, thereby ensuring efficient fund distribution and greater transparency.
Key Insights from Pilot Projects
The partnership follows nearly two years of pilot programs conducted in five countries, including Haiti, Syria, Kenya, Guatemala, and the Gambia, with positive outcomes:
- Distribution costs decreased from 10% to 2% in Aleppo, Syria, thanks to blockchain.
- The Haiti pilot achieved a 100% success rate in payment processing.
- All funds were verifiably tracked on the blockchain, enhancing transparency for donor engagements.
In addition to these countries, prototypes were also established for Colombia and Papua New Guinea, providing a broad range of tested implementations.
Future Directions and Expectations
Moving forward, the UNDP and Stellar project will continue until 2027, coordinated through UNDP’s Alternative Finance Lab in Istanbul. The focus will be on developing an operational infrastructure based on insights gained from previous trials, including plans for governance and onboarding procedures to integrate existing payment systems.
